Saha, Meghnad (1893-1956) educationalist and scientist. He was born on 6 October 1893 at village Seoratoli in Talebabad Pargana of Dhaka district. Brought up in fairly straitened circumstances, Meghnad had his early schooling at his village school. In 1905 he was admitted to Dhaka Collegiate School. He was, however, forced to leave the school because of his participation in the swadeshi movement.
Meghnad Saha later joined Kishorilal Jubilee School. In 1909, he earned the distinction of securing highest marks in Bangla, Sanskrit, English and mathematics in the Entrance Examination. In that examination Saha stood first among East Bengal students and third among students from the whole of Bengal. He passed the ISc examination from dhaka college in 1911. Soon after, he went to Kolkata to enrol as a student at presidency college.

Meghnad Saha (6 October 1893 – 16 February 1956) was a pioneer in Astrophysics in India. He made a remarkable contribution to the field of Astrophysics. His study of the thermal ionisation of elements led him to formulate what is known as the Saha equation. This equation is one of the basic tools for the interpretation of the spectra of stars in astrophysics. By studying the spectra of various stars, one can find their temperature and from that, using Saha's equation, determine the ionisation state of the various elements making up the star.
He also invented an instrument to measure the weight and pressure of solar rays and contributed to the construction of several scientific institutions, including Allahabad University's Physics Department and the Institute of Nuclear Physics in Calcutta. He founded the journal Science and Culture and served as its editor until his death. He was the driving force behind the formation of several scientific societies, including the National Academy of Science (1930), the Indian Physical Society (1934), and the Indian Institute of Science (1935).

Who is Meghnad Saha?
Meghnad Saha was a renowned Indian astrophysicist who developed the ionisation theory, explaining stellar spectra’ origin. Meghnad Saha rose from humble beginnings in a small village to become one of the world’s most renowned scientists of his time. He struggled to get a primary education because he was born into a low-income family. He graduated with honours from college and landed a job at the University College of Science in Calcutta. He began his research without access to a well-equipped laboratory or a research guide. Nonetheless, he proposed the Saha ionisation equation, which can be used to identify the chemical and physical conditions in stars.

In 1917, the University College of Science in Kolkata appointed Meghnad Saha as a professor. He taught quantum physics there. He presided over the Indian Science Congress in 1934.
