John Negroponte

John Negroponte is currently the James R. Schlesinger Distinguished Professor at the University of Virginia’s Miller Center. Prior to this, Negroponte was the first director of national intelligence under President George W. Bush and later served as deputy secretary of state, where he was the State Department’s chief operating officer. He has been ambassador to Honduras, Mexico, the Philippines, the United Nations, and Iraq. In Washington, he served twice on the National Security Council staff, first as director for Vietnam in the Nixon Administration and then as deputy national security advisor under President Ronald Reagan. Negroponte is the vice chairman of McLarty Associates in Washington, DC. He serves as chairman emeritus of the Council of the Americas/Americas Society. He is co-chairman of the U.S.-Philippines Society and a past member of the secretary of state’s Foreign Affairs Policy Board. Former Director of National Intelligence

Former Ambassador John D. Negroponte was sworn in as the first Director of National Intelligence (DNI) on April 21, 2005. Previously, he had been serving as United States Ambassador to Iraq since June 28, 2004. From September 18, 2001, until his appointment to Iraq, Ambassador Negroponte served as the United States Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

From 1997 to 2001, Ambassador Negroponte was employed in the private sector as Executive Vice President for Global Markets of The McGraw-Hill Companies in New York.

From 1960 to 1997, Ambassador Negroponte was a member of the Career Foreign Service. He served at eight different Foreign Service posts in Asia, Europe and Latin America; and he also held important positions at the State Department and the White House.
