Obituaries reflected on his ‘eventful career’ which they noted could not be adequately covered in a short newspaper article.1 Flood’s adult life in two hemispheres saw him undertaking clandestine activism in Ireland and Britain for up to a decade, followed by a varied public career for a further four decades, much of it in Queensland. His career began in the 1860s as a celebrated Irish revolutionary, organising a daring gaol escape and planning an attack on Chester Castle in northern England. The Brisbane Truth summed up: ‘He was one of the stormy petrels of humanity; one of those born to make history, and he made it’.2 Despite being famous during his lifetime and immediately after his death, Flood has been overlooked by biographers. John Flood (21 May 1835 – 25 August 1909) was an Irish revolutionary and convict exile, and later Australian newspaperman, mining secretary and politician.
Early years
John Flood was born on 21 May 1835, in Sutton, County Dublin, one of nine children of Patrick Flood, shipowner, and his wife Elizabeth (née Kemp). He was later described as a pupil of Clongowes Wood College, but the school records do not confirm this. There is also doubt about his journalistic activities in Ireland, where he may have been involved with the Ir My research covers technology and society (including AI and blockchain), the sociology of the professions, especially law, the organisation of big law firms, and the globalisation of law. I have published over 150 articles, chapters, and reports, along with three books. I have held chairs in four different countries along with a number of visiting professorships. I have been awarded a number of research fellowships including the Exxon Fellowship in Ethics at Indiana University-Bloomington, the Jean Monnet Fellowship at the European University Institute, Florence, and a Leverhulme Research Fellowship in the UK. I am currently a Research Associate at the University College London Centre for Blockchain Technologies. I am also Adjunct Professor in Law at QUT.•
