David M. Nonis (born May 25, 1966 in Burnaby, British Columbia) is a former Canadianice hockeydefenceman, former general manager and executive of the National Hockey League's Vancouver Canucks and current General manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Playing career[]
Growing up in Burnaby, B.C., Nonis played junior hockey with the Burnaby Bluehawks of the BCJHL in 1982–83. He then began collegiate hockey in the NCAA at the University of Maine, playing 153 games from 1984 through 1988. Nonis spent his final two years for the Bears as team captain, leading Maine to back-to-back NCAA championship tournaments. After completing his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1988, Nonis played a year of professional hockey in Denmark and in 1989 returned to the University of Maine as an assistant coach for one season.
Executive career[]

Years before he became the general manager of the Vancouver Canucks or Toronto Maple Leafs, Dave Nonis left British Columbia and travelled to the northeastern United States to pursue a life in hockey.
Now his son is doing the same, except in reverse. Nick Nonis, born in Connecticut in 1995 when his dad was working at the National Hockey League’s head office in New York, is a rookie defencemen with the Powell River Kings of the B.C. Hockey League.
Nick is developing his game under longtime Powell River coach Kent Lewis, an old friend of his father’s, before starting his scholarship next season or the year after at the University of New Hampshire.

Nonis’ most notable moves with Canucks
Dave Nonis may not be as well known as Brian Burke but the new Toronto Maple Leafs general manager had a fairly decent track record of moves during his tenure in Vancouver.
His most prominent move was stealing all-star goaltender Roberto Luongo from Florida for next to nothing and he played a large role in bringing in current head coach Alain Vigneault to replace Marc Crawford.
He was not the most consistent drafter, but came up with outstanding class where he landed two high-quality NHL starters. Nonis was said to be much more conservative than his predecessor and his reluctance to move top prospects may have hurt him at the time, but certainly helped the Canucks franchise down the road.
