Robert D. Hales

Elder Hales has frequently reminded those he counsels to return with honor.

Young Robert D. Hales, inquisitive and happy, was raised in a gospel-centered home on Long Island, New York.

When Robert D. Hales was a graduate student at Harvard University, he was called to be the president of his elders quorum. He was willing to accept the call. But he also knew that because of the intensity of the courses required in his master’s of business administration program, professors discouraged students from participating in outside activities. He and his wife, Mary, prayed for guidance and discussed the calling together. As they did, Mary said, “I’d rather have an active priesthood holder than a man who holds a master’s degree from Harvard. We’ll do them both.”

The next day when Robert came home from school, he discovered that Mary had walled off a section of the unfinished basement in their apartment to create a small office. The office would give Robert a place where he could concentrate on his studies, so that he would be better able to fulfill his elders quorum

Before attending church each Sunday morning, Aaronic Priesthood holder Robert Hales had to sweep the floor of their rented hall and clean up from the party there the night before. He grew up in a family where dedication to the Church and its priorities began early. His father’s employment with a large commercial art firm in New York City took him and his young bride from Rexburg, Idaho, to the area where Robert and his brother and sister were born. The children were reared on a heavily wooded place on Long Island called Great Neck. They lived twenty miles from where they attended church in a Citizen’s League hall in Queens, New York. Quorum of the Twelve Apostles 1994–2017

Elder Robert D. Hales was sustained as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on April 2, 1994.

Elder Hales received his call as a General Authority on April 4, 1975. He served as an Assistant to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and later as a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy. He was Presiding Bishop of the Church from April, 1985 until called to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

He was a Regional Representative for five years prior to his call as a General Authority. He earlier served as a branch president, bishop, high councilor, and stake president¹s counselor. He was president of the England London Mission in the late 1970s and has served as first counselor in the Sunday School general presidency.

Prior to his call to full-time Church service, Elder Hales had a distinguished business career, serving in executive positions with three major national companies.
