Claude Monet is a French painter known for his significant contribution to the Impressionist art movement. Born in Paris on November 14, 1840, he spent his childhood in the city of Havre (Normandy) where his family moved when he was five years old. Monet developed his passion over time, starting with caricature and then, encouraged by his father, painting, which he studied in Paris in 1859 at the Swiss Academy. Monet’s military service in Algeria in 1861 cut short his studies but he nonetheless continued to experiment with different artistic forms. Forced to return to Paris in 1862 following an illness he contracted (pleurisy), Monet met the Swiss painter Charles Gleyre and also worked with Alfred Sisley, Auguste Renoir and Frédéric Basille who all become his close friends.

Claude Monet was one of the founding fathers of French Impressionism. His primary focus was capturing the effect of light on a subject. Monet remained committed to the Impressionist style throughout his life, even as Fauvism, Cubism, and abstract painting emerged before his death in 1926.
First Painting Lessons
Claude Monet was born in Paris but spent his childhood in Le Havre. His first artistic creations were caricatures, drawn when he was a young boy. Near his home was a small shop owned by marine painter Eugene Boudin, who recognized Monet's talent and offered him his first painting lessons.
Monet's family was not supportive of his artistic aspirations. In 1860, he was drafted and sent to Northern Africa for two years. Upon returning, he moved to Paris and studied painting at Gleyre's studio. There, he met Auguste Renoir, Sisley, Bazille, and others, forming the nucleus of the future Impressionist movement.
