The second child of an Italian germanist and a Greek painter, Valeria Golino grew up in Naples until her parents parted. After three years in Athens with her mother and another three in Naples with her father, she began to work as a model. Valeria Golino (born 22 October 1965) is an Italian actress and film director. She is best known to English-language audiences for her roles in Rain Man, Big Top Pee-wee, and Hot Shots!, where she performed the "olive-in-the-belly-button" scene. Early life

Golino was born on 22 October 1965[2] in Naples, Italy, the daughter of an Italian father who was a Germanist scholar, and a Greek mother, Lalla,[3] who was a painter. One of her grandmothers was Egyptian-French.[4] She grew up in an "artistic household",[5] and after her parents split up, was raised alternating between Athens and Sorrento (near Naples).[6] Golino is the niece of the journalist Enzo Golino at L'Espresso, and her brother is a musician.
