Azyumardi Azra is the director of the graduate school at Sharif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta. He served as the rector of the same university from 1998 to 2006. He was previously a professor of history at Universitas Islam Negeri in Jakarta, Indonesia. After graduating from the State Institute for Islamic Studies in Jakarta he studied for his Ph.D. at Columbia University. He is the founder and editor-in-chief of Studia Islamika, an Indonesian journal for Islamic studies. He has published widely, particularly on contemporary Southeast Asian Islam. In 2010, he received the title of Commander of the Order of the British Empire, an honorary order from the United Kingdom.

JAKARTADAILY.ID – Prof. Dr. H. Azyumardi Azra, M.Phil., M.A., Indonesian Muslim scholar, writer, academic, and senior journalist passed away on September 18, 2022.

He is a well-known Muslim scholar in the country, whose ideas and works are respected not only domestically, but also in various international forums.

Prof. Azyumardi was born in Lubung Alung, Padang Pariaman, West Sumatra on March 4, 1955. He is widely known as a respected and moderate-leaning Muslim scholar.

In 1982, Prof. Azyumardi was an undergraduate student at the Tarbiyah Faculty of IAIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta.

He received a Fulbright scholarship which led to him obtaining a Master of Art (MA) degree at the Department of Middle Eastern Language and Culture at Columbia University in 1988.

Azyumardi Azra, CBE was born in Padang Pariaman, West Sumatra, Indonesia, on March 4, 1955. He is prominent as one of Indonesian public intellectuals, Muslim scholar and former Rector of Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta. He graduated from Department of History, Columbia University (1992). He is known as a prolific books writer; member of advisory board of a number of international organizations such as UN Democracy Fund (UNDEF), International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA). Currently, he is the Director of Graduate School, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta. In 2010, he received the title of Commander of the Order of the British Empire, an honorary order from the United Kingdom.
