It is easy to imagine Geoffrey Bradfield, the South African–born interior designer, moonlighting on Masterpiece Theatre as one of those debonair men of the world with silver hair and a crisp accent who solve mysteries and mix cocktails with equal flair. He is fond of bespoke suits and of striped dress shirts with starched collars. He lives and works in a Manhattan town house with a dreamy, all-white reception room that Cocteau would have loved. His forte is the grand entrance, the bold gesture and the sleek formality of Art Déco. If his interiors tend to be spare ("I hate the clutter of gratuitous detail," he says. "In that respect, I'm a modernist"), he is never sparing of glamour.

A favorite quotation of Geoffrey Bradfield’s comes from the late English aesthete the Honorable Stephen Tennant: “The exact limitations of one’s taste should be an intense pleasure.” It’s a philosophy that Bradfield holds dear. South African born and New York seasoned, Bradfield designs urbane interiors—opulent, daring, contemporary, with an emphasis on the “orchestration of surprise, the unusual, the quirky” (witness his Millennium Modern line of furniture, which reenvisions traditional forms in Lucite).
