Young democracy clashed with authoritarian legacies in Indonesia – and it lost
In Indonesia's most recent presidential elections, voters elected a popular strongman. Iqra Anugrah explains that the recent illiberal direction of Indonesian democracy has its roots in the authoritarian legacy of a political figure from the last century: the charismatic, Machiavellian and hugely influential Ali Moertopo
After years of bucking the global authoritarian turn, Indonesia is now led by an illiberal strongman. Victory for Prabowo Subianto in the recent presidential election suggests the hollowing-out of Indonesian democracy. Subianto is a rich ex-general who served during the dictatorship of his former father-in-law Suharto. He is supported by a wide section of elites, including his former rival, outgoing president Joko Widodo (Jokowi).

About Centre for Strategic and International Studies
Founded in 1971, the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) has won recognition as an important research and policy institution both within Indonesia and internationally. Its development over more than three decades is entwined with the history of Indonesia itself.
The Beginnings
The origins of CSIS lie in discussions and activities in the 1960s undertaken independently by two groups of Indonesian scholars, which comprise of a number of Indonesian graduate students studying abroad and a group of activists within Indonesia. Given the turmoil in Indonesia at that time, both were convinced that insufficient attention was being given to strategic and international studies within Indonesia.
CSIS was established on 1 September 1971. It had the support of the late Ali Moertopo and Soedjono Hoemardani, then personal assistants to the newly elected President Soeharto, and a corporate body, Yayasan Proklamasi (Proclamation Foundation), established to raise the necessary funding. Ali Murtopo
Indonesian politician and general
Ali Murtopo (23 September 1924 – 15 May 1984) was a prominent Indonesian general and political figure during the first half of General Suharto's New Order regime.
Early life
Ali Murtopo was born on 23 September 1924[1] in Kebumen, Central Java and received his education in Central Java and West Java.[2] He met his wife, Wastoeti, in Yogyakarta and they were married in May 1956.[3]
Military career
Born in Blora 23 September 1924, Ali Murtopo spent his education in Meer Uitgebreid Lager Onderwijs.[4][5] As a teenager, Ali joined Hizbullah but would eventually join the Indonesian military. During the Indonesian National Revolution, Ali became a staff member in a brigade led by Ahmad Yani.[citation needed]
