Arno Rafael Minkkinen (born in Helsinki, 1945) is a Finnish-American photographer. His work, praised worldwide, is totally dedicated to self-portrait with a militant background in favour of a better place for mankind within nature. The role he assigns himself is often modest, faded, evocative of a Paradise Lost where humankind started its ontological journey. A poetical resident of the world, his world, Minkkinen considers his intervention within the landscape as a natural extension of his body, thereby quoting a part in relation with the whole. A tautology that brings us to discover how a human body, his own, is perfectly integrated within a nature he is part of but also dependent on. As a matter of fact, the artist never hesitates to put himself at at risk, pushing the limits of what is possible or tolerable through body constraint in connection with breathing, contortion or resistance to heat and cold techniques. Arno Rafael Minkkinen (born 4 June 1945)[1] is a Finnish-American photographer who works in the United States.
Published and exhibited worldwide, Minkkinen's work can be found in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Finnish Museum of Photography.[2]
Seven solo monographs on his work have been published: Frostbite (1978), Waterline (1994, winner of the 25th Rencontres d'Arles Book Prize), Body Land (1999), SAGA: The Journey of Arno Rafael Minkkinen, 35 Years of Photographs (2005), Homework: The Finnish Photographs (2008), Swimming in the Air (2009), and Balanced Equation (2010).[3] The retrospective survey SAGA premiered at the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, MA, in 2005. The 120-print retrospective toured to Romania, Slovakia, Finland, Italy, China, and Canada.[4]
Minkkinen was made a Knight of the Order of the Lion of Finland of the first class by the Finnish government in 1992, and awarded the Finnish State Art Prize in Photography in 2006.[ Arno Rafael Minkkinen is a Finnish American photographer with over 100 solo exhibitions—with some three dozen of these being museum venues—and 200 group exhibitions at galleries, museums, and institutions worldwide. Emeritus Professor of Art at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and Docent at Aalto University School of Art, Design, and Architecture in Helsinki, Minkkinen’s writings and academic and curatorial endeavors have been equally extensive and international in scope. Already in 1969—well before the self-portrait genre became what it is today—Minkkinen began what would become a personal quest, dedicating over five decades now to a single concept, that of unmanipulated nude self-portraits in communion and counterpoint with nature and urban settings. To date his shooting locations number 30 countries around the world and 30 American States.
