Emergency liquidity will remain a major topic in your new position, with you joining the Bank Council of the Swiss National Bank (SNB) on 1 May. The SNB grants emergency liquidity assistance (ELA). Do adjustments need to be made here?
Although the crisis in the US was triggered by regional banks such as Silicon Valley Bank, it was still a systemic crisis and required the Fed’s intervention and broad guarantees. For Switzerland, this means ELA must be available to all banks. To suggest that they should be exclusive to only three or four large banks is a highly dangerous proposition.
The search for a successor to the outgoing Chairman Thomas Jordan is underway within the Bank Council. You have also been named as a candidate yourself. Are you standing?

Deepika Sharma, CFA, is a Portfolio Manager/Analyst at Astor Investment Management, a $2bn asset management firm, where she co-manages the multi-asset portfolios and sector rotation fund and sits on the Investment Committee. Deepika completed her Masters in International Finance at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University and holds FINRA licenses 3 and 65.

Biography
Christian Bauer began his banking career in 1997 at Credit Suisse in Zurich where he worked until 1999. He then moved to Dresdner Bank. In 2003 he became a Private Banker at Bank Leumi (Switzerland) where he gained experience in managing international clients. In 2006 he then joined ABN AMRO Private Banking (Switzerland) where he was responsible for English-speaking countries, Western Europe and the Israeli market. When ABN AMRO Switzerland was taken over by Union Bancaire Privée in 2011, he became a Managing Director at UBP Zurich and continued to oversee the same regions.
He joined REYL & Cie in 2014 and became General Manager of the Zurich branch in May 2021.
Education
Christian Bauer graduated from CEIBS Zurich (Bachelor of Science in Business Administration ‘09 and from INSEAD in Paris ‘12 (Private Banking Certification Program). He is also a Certified Wealth Management Advisor (CWMA).
