Sundlun goes full circle
Rhode Islanders of a certain age will recall the day 24 years ago when then-Gov. Bruce Sundlun acknowledged he had a daughter, Kara Hewes. Sundlun had not married Kara’s mother or revealed anything about the child’s existence until she came forward to introduce herself.
“Seventeen-year-old Kara Kathleen Hewes yesterday focused her piercing blue eyes on the TV cameras and asked Rhode Island's Governor Sundlun to embrace her as his only daughter,” The Providence Journal reported on June 10, 1993.
He did. And she, him.
Kara spent the summer of 1993 at Sundlun’s Newport home getting to know her father and brothers. She changed her last name to Sundlun while majoring in communications and political science at the University of Michigan, and entered broadcasting, which had been one of Sundlun’s businesses before being elected governor.
“We saw a lot of similarities in each other,” Kara told The Journal in a 2006 profile of Sundlun, then 86.
“I liked her,” her father said. “I looked forward to having some sort of a relationship as life went on.”
