Success in Seaweeds: The Life of Rosalind Wee

There is money in seaweeds! This was proven by Rosalind Wee, a Chinese-Filipino teacher and occasional actress who got wealthy trading and processing seaweeds harvested from many areas of the Philippines. Because her company is one of the Philippines’ biggest exporters of dried seaweed, she is considered the “Seaweed Queen of the Philippines.”

Rosalind Wee is the woman behind the W group of companies which include W Hydrocolloids Inc. and Marine Resources Development Corporation. Actually, she co-founded the diversified family business with her husband Lee Hiong Tan Wee, the Philippine ambassador to Indonesia. Together, they started the business in 1970 or 50 years ago. Rosalind is vice chairman of the group which now includes a real estate company with at least six buildings in the Bonifacio Global City (BGC) in Taguig under its fold.

In past KFR entries I have detailed the January of 2009 KFR, or Kidnap for Ransom, of Zamboanga City businessman Eliseo Hablo. On January 8th, 2009 Hablo, owner of two Julie's Bakeshop franchises in the city and a large fishing fleet also based in the city had spent the afternoon at one of the Julie franchises in a drinking bout with friends. As the day turned into evening and the 44 year old man jumped into his white Hyundai Starex van for the ride home to his compound on the city's Governor Gamins Road he decided to first stop at his second franchise on the other side of town. En route he found his van boxed in by two motorcycles, each holding gunmen on the rear of the bike. As they forced Hablo's van to stop both gunmen jumped in and forced him to drive to the city's Barangay San Roque where the van was later discovered in the Sanroe Subdivision, with blood stains on the front seat.

Local elections were held in Zamboanga City on May 10, 2004, within the Philippine general election. The voters elected for the elective local posts in the city: the mayor, vice mayor, 12 councilors and one representative from its lone district.

Mayoral and vice mayoral elections

Mayor Maria Clara Lobregat died of complications in January 2004, paving the mayoralty race for the ruling Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino wide open since she was the presumptive nominee running for a third term. Vice-Mayor Erbie Fabian took her place as acting mayor.

Lobregat's son, incumbent Congressman Celso Lobregat became the standard-bearer of the LDP, and incumbent Mayor Fabian will run for the post left by Celso. Celso picked Councilor Beng Climaco as his running-mate.

Results

The candidate for district representative, mayor, and vice mayor with the highest number of votes wins the seat; they are voted separately; therefore, they may be of different parties when elected.
