Georgian writer (1931–2018)

Tamaz Chiladze (Georgian: თამაზ ჭილაძე; 5 March 1931 – 28 September 2018) was a Georgian writer, dramatist and poet. He was the elder brother of Georgian writer Otar Chiladze.[1]

Biography

Chiladze was born to a family of an economist and a writer in 1931 in Signagi, Georgia. He graduated from the Department of Philology of Tbilisi State University in 1954. In the same year, Chiladze published his first collection of poems. Ciskari magazine printed his first story, Taking the Walk with the Pony Phaeton. In 1965, his play The Aquarium was staged at the Rustaveli Theater. He had since been recognized as the author of the anthology of Georgian classical dramaturgy. According to the author, the first critic of his writings was his mother, who was a poet herself.[2]

He is now primarily known as a playwright, though his short fiction and novels are also considered as classics of Georgian Literature. He is the elder brother of Otar Chiladze. Soon after graduating Tamaz Chiladze started working for then widely popular magazine Tsiskari (The Daybreak), later became the chief editor of the magazine Sabchota Khelovneba (The Soviet Art) (1973-81). From 1991 he was reading a course of lectures in dramaturgy at Georgia’s Theater and Cinema Institute. During the years 1997-2008 he was the chief editor of the magazine Mnatobi (The Luminary). He published his first collection of poetry in 1956. Since that time many of his fiction, non-fiction and poetry books have been published and today they are considered to be the classics of Georgian literature.
