Tommy Cash (1940–2024)

Tommy Cash was a musician and the younger brother of country music legend Johnny Cash. Although he was raised in Arkansas, he got his musical start in Tennessee—first in Memphis and later as part of the Nashville establishment. Often employing the familiar country music themes of Christianity, the blue-collar lifestyle, and patriotism, he had numerous hit albums and songs throughout his career, among them the singles “Six White Horses,” “Rise and Shine,” and “One Song Away.”

Tommy Cash was born on April 5, 1940, in Dyess (Mississippi County) to Ray and Carrie Cash, both of whom were Arkansas natives; he was the youngest of seven children. Growing up in Dyess, Cash worked at the movie theater as a projectionist and played for his junior high school basketball team. Cash excelled on the court, making the All-State team. With the help of his coach Tom Parks, whom he idolized, he led his high school team to the state championship. For a time, Cash considered becoming a professional basketball coach. As an adult, he became an avid golfer.

John R. Cash (born J. R. Cash; February 26, 1932 – September 12, 2003) was an American singer-songwriter. Most of Cash's music contains themes of sorrow, moral tribulation, and redemption, especially songs from the later stages of his career.^[3]^[4] He was known for his deep, calm, bass-baritone voice,^[a] the distinctive sound of his backing band, the Tennessee Three, that was characterized by its train-like chugging guitar rhythms, a rebelliousness^[6]^[7] coupled with an increasingly somber and humble demeanor,^[3] and his free prison concerts.^[8] Cash wore a trademark all-black stage wardrobe, which earned him the nickname "Man in Black".^[b]

Tommy Cash, country singer and the youngest brother of legendary country singer Johnny Cash, died at 84 on Friday.

His death, which falls nearly 21 years after Johnny Cash's Sept. 12, 2003, death, was first shared in a social media post Saturday by the Johnny Cash Museum, the Nashville, Tennessee-based facility that honors his brother.

"We are saddened to announce that the world lost a bright light last evening with the passing of Tommy Cash," the museum wrote.

A cause of death was not cited in the social media post or the statement written by Johnny Cash Museum CEO and founder Bill Miller.

"I knew him for over 50 years," Miller wrote on Instagram. "Tommy Cash was a loyal supporter of the Johnny Cash Museum and a very beloved member of our extended family as well as a highly respected member of the music industry."
