Biography
Professor (MFA, University of Utah)
Marla is a Professor at Boise State University in the Department of Theatre Arts and directs the Dance Minor, the Dance Option BA Degree and the Summer DanceFest. Marla choreographs regularly for Boise State productions including Metamorphoses, Cabaret, HMS Pinafore, Pippin, Into the Woods and Damn Yankees. She is Co-Artistic Director of Idaho Dance Theatre, professional company in-residence at Boise State and has choreographed over 60 ballets for the company. She loves to collaborate with other artists and has worked with Opera Idaho, Del Parkinson, The Verde Percussion Group, among others. In 2009 she received the award for distinguished community engagement from the College of Arts and Sciences at Boise State. In 2007 she was named the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, “Dance Educator of the Year” in the Northwest District. She has also received the Idaho Commission on the Arts Artist Fellowship.

The facts: Marla Hanson's face is cut up by two men with single-edged razor blades. The man behind the attack is her landlord, Steve Roth, who had hired a childhood friend and another thug to do the job after Hanson, a model, rejected him. Hanson, who receives the gift of a lifetime trust fund from the wealthy Milton Petri, stays in the public eye for some time afterward as Bright Lights, Big City author Jay McInerney's girlfriend.
Marla's reaction: "Actually I'm feeling great," she said to television reporters later on the day of her attack. "They said the stitches will be out in a couple of days. And you know, in a few months maybe I can do some modeling. Not a lot of close-ups. " She would later battle depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.

The 1986 Attack on Model Marla Hanson
On Thursday, June 5, 1986, in New York City, 24-year-old Marla Hanson was lashed across her face with razors at the behest of her landlord (Steven Roth), who was fascinated with the rising model and upset she wanted to leave his apartment building. The case made her famous across the country for her moxie and vitality. It was also yet another reminder of how violent New York was in the 1980s.
The eventual trials against Roth and later the two men he hired for the mission, Steven Bowman and Darren Norman, tried to paint Marla as a man-eater who thrived on attention. Their defense attorney, Alton H. Maddox, said at the beginning of the trial: “I will tell you about a woman named Marla Hanson, who was after every man in this city, a woman who preyed on men and their relationships with women.”
