Biography
One of these agendas turned out to be her own abdication in 1654, at age 28 and after a mere ten years as the ruler of Sweden. The reasons for Christina’s abdication, which she herself never made publicly known, have been extensively discussed, particularly by Swedish historians. Some point to her refusal to marry, which she articulated early and that would have presented a major issue in terms of securing the succession. Others believe her reasons to be more personal: a wish to venture outside of the confinements of Sweden and interact with the more vibrant culture of the European continent, or simply a weariness of governing that was deepened by the high standards she set for herself. But perhaps most common has been to link Christina’s abdication to the second phase of transition that she underwent shortly after her abdication: her conversion to Catholicism. Christina converted in a private ceremony in Brussels on Christmas Eve of 1654, which was later followed by an official conversion that took place in Innsbruck on November 3, 1655.
