August 04 was the fifth death anniversary of Safwat Ghayur. An army officer who met Safwat first time described him as “a lean man, with loosely fitted clothes, a hint of pattas (a pushtu word for hair coming down over the neck) peeping out from behind his beret, with a swagger in his gait, a sultry smile and a twinkle in his eye. He was a good looking person radiating confidence and authority”. This is the best description of a fine police officer and a gentleman who laid down his life to secure peace for his beloved city. He was killed in an attack on his vehicle by a suicide bomber in Peshawar on August 04, 2010 and the police lost one of its finest and bravest officers.

LAHORE, Aug 04 (APP): Commandant National Highways and Motorway Police (NH&MP) Training College, Sheikhupura Mehboob Aslam Lillah has said that Shaheed Additional Inspector General of Police (Addl IGP) Safwat Ghayur was a role model police officer who embodied courage, valour and discipline.

In an interview with APP on Police Martyrs Day at his office on Wednesday, he said Safwat Ghayur was a daredevil police officer who challenged the terrorists as Commandant Frontier Constabulary (FC), Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and Chief Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Peshawar, adding that Ghayur was a leader who led all expeditions from the front against the criminals and terrorists.

Safwat Ghayur embraced martyrdom on August 4, 2010 in a suicide attack by a Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) insurgent in Peshawar. He was awarded posthumous Sitara-e-Shujat for his valour and sacrifice in the line of duty.

Safwat Ghayur (14 July 1959 – 4 August 2010) was an additional Inspector General of the Police Service of Pakistan, serving as the commandant of the Frontier Constabulary in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.[1] Renowned for his leadership in the fight against terrorism, he was tragically killed in a suicide attack by the Pakistani Taliban.

Safwat Ghayur was the nephew of Pakistan Movement activist SardarAbdur Rab Nishtar, a cousin of the former Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Owais Ahmed Ghani and a cousin of former Chief of Armed forces General Abdul Waheed Kakar.[citation needed] His brother-in-law, Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao, was twice the Chief Minister of the erstwhile pakhtunkhwa, as well as Interior Minister of Pakistan.[citation needed].
