Biography

Andrew Marr was born in Glasgow in 1959, brought up outside Dundee in Perthshire, and schooled in Dundee, Fife, and at Loretto, Musselburgh. He joined in 1977 to read for a BA in English. He went on to become a trainee journalist with The Scotsman in 1981, where he was subsequently general reporter, business reporter and parliamentary correspondent. Andrew joined the start-up team of The Independent as political correspondent in 1986. He has also been political editor of The Economist and Scotsman, and chief commentator of The Independent and editor, 1996-8. He was also a political columnist for The Observer and Express, 1998-2000. He worked as political editor of the BBC 2000-5 and has hosted Start the Week from 2002-present and The Andrew Marr Show 2005-2021.

Andrew Marr was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1959. He is best known as a television presenter and as a writer; but his greatest passion is for painting. 

 

His first solo show, Strokes of Colour, was at Corke Gallery in Liverpool, June – July 2017. In the Autumn of 2017 Andrew exhibited alongside Adrian Hemmings at the Bermondsey Art Project in London, and also had a solo show at Trinity Hall in Cambridge. In July 2018, a new collection of paintings was exhibited in his second solo exhibition, Angels & Open Windows, at the Corke Gallery during the 2018 Liverpool Biennial. In May 2019, Andrew exhibited a suite of nine paintings with Richard Demarco at the Scuola Grande di San Marco during the Venice Biennale. Later that summer, a larger collection of works entitled Nineteen Paintings and Nine Drawings about Brexit, Scotland and Healing was exhibited during the Edinburgh Festival in the Demarco Wing of Robert McDowell’s Summerhall Arts Centre. Andrew Marr is a highly regarded political journalist and speaker on international affairs.   Until December 2021 he was the host of weekly BBC programme ‘The Andrew Marr Show’, and Radio 4’s ‘Start the Week’.  Today,  he presents his own programmes on radio stations LBC and Classic FM as well as a podcast for station owners, Global.

Andrew has edited a national newspaper, led the BBC’s political coverage and presented documentaries about political, economic and cultural history. He is also a prolific author, writing books to accompany his TV documentaries, delving into painting and drawing, and penning political thrillers.

Andrew began his journalistic career in print as a trainee and junior business reporter for The Scotsman.
