Rich Silverstein is the Co-Founder and Co-Chairman of Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, an dvertising agency in San Francisco. In their twenty-three year history they have been one of the most honored agencies in the world. They were recently named “2006 Agency of the Year” by both AdWeek and Creativity, and Advertising Age selected them for “2006 Digital Agency of the Year” and “2006 Campaign of the Year” for their Hewlett-Packard campaign.
Rich grew up in New York and attended the Parsons School of Design. He began his career as an art director for Rolling Stone magazine and then worked at various advertising agencies before founding his own agency in 1984 with Jeff Goodby. He is a member of both the New York Art Director’s and the One Club of New York’s Halls of Fame.
In addition, Rich also serves on the boards for the USA Cycling Federation, the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy and Specialized Bicycles.

Starting Out: Goodby Silverstein’s Rich Silverstein on acting like a pitbull
On his first job
At my first job ever in high school, I worked at a hardware store in Yorktown Heights, New York, and gave everyone the wrong equipment — the wrong screws, the wrong nails. I was a junior in high school. So I wasn’t very good at it.
On how he stumbled into advertising
I went to the Parsons School of Design, and I wanted to be a graphic designer. At that time, the heroes were Milton Glaser at Push Pin Studios and the editorial magazine designers at Esquire. That was what I was drawn to. I only stumbled into advertising. While going to Parsons, I interned with designer Dick Hess of the Push Pin Studio era. Then, I came to San Francisco and became an art director and designer at Rolling Stone magazine and an art director at San Francisco magazine. There, I started noticing that ads were coming through that I had to put into the magazine, and I thought, oh, they look kind of interesting. And I thought more money was being spent in advertising than in editorial. I had no
