The President today announced his intention to nominate Catalina Vasquez Villalpando to be Treasurer of the United States. She would succeed Katherine D. Ortega.

Since 1985 Ms. Villalpando has been a senior vice president and partner of Communications International, Inc., in Washington, DC. She is currently national chairman for the Republican National Hispanic Assembly and has served in this capacity since 1987. Prior to this Ms. Villalpando served as Special Assistant to the President for Public Liaison at the White House, 1983 - 1985. She was the voter groups coordinator for the Republican Party of Texas, 1981 - 1983; Staff Assistant in the White House Office of Presidential Personnel, 1980 - 1981; and vice president of Mid-South Oil Co., 1979 - 1980.

Former U.S. treasurer pleads guilty to income tax evasion

Former U.S. Treasurer Catalina Vasquez Villalpando pleaded guilty Thursday to tax evasion, obstruction of justice and conspiring to hide income from a former employer.

Villalpando _ whose signature appears on U.S. paper money printed between December 1989 and January 1993 _ admitted evading more than $47,000 in federal income taxes.

She acknowledged obstructing an independent prosecutor's investigation of the Reagan-era influence-peddling scandal at the Department of Housing and Urban Development and admitted concealing income and benefits she received from her former employer while serving as U.S. treasurer.

Villalpando faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine on each of the three counts.

U.S. District Judge Thomas Hogan allowed Villalpando to remain free until sentencing, but he did not set a date because she has agreed first to cooperate with continuing investigations by the Justice Department and Arlin Adams, the independent counsel investigating the HUD scandal.

Early life and education

Villalpando was born Catalina Vásquez to a poor family in San Marcos, Texas, one of four girls and two boys.^[1] Villalpando's father, a lifelong Democrat and migrant worker, used to take her and her siblings out into the fields so they would know what it was like to pick crops for a living.

After attending parochial school, Villalpando graduated from San Marcos High School. She subsequently went to work at a jewelry store and as a secretary at Southwest Texas State College, where she attended part-time. She did not complete her stud
